General Objectives: To become aware of the multi-dimensional concept of poverty and to appreciate some risk factors which perpetrate it, and other which can help in its prevention. Specific: To recognise poverty as a multi-dimensional phenomenon. To link poverty and human rights, recognising that respect for, and coverage by, these makes it difficult for poverty to develop, and vice versa. To identify risk factors for falling into poverty. To identify factors which can prevent or mitigate poverty. To identify poverty as a factor in violence and against peace. To recognise that democracy favours the fight against poverty. To link social exclusion and poverty. To appreciate that ending poverty is a question of social justice. To recognise the value of formal and informal education as a powerful preventative and mitigating factor for poverty.
