An introduction to the multi-dimensional concept of poverty and some elements in the struggle against it. The objective is for the pupils to appreciate the multi-dimensional nature of poverty and to become aware of the risks and elements which result in the creation of pockets of poverty.
General Objectives: To become aware of the multi-dimensional concept of poverty and to appreciate some risk factors which perpetrate it, and other which can help in its prevention. Specific: To recognise poverty as a multi-dimensional phenomenon. To link poverty and human rights, recognising that respect for, and coverage by, these makes it difficult for poverty to develop, and vice versa. To identify risk factors for falling into poverty. To identify factors which can prevent or mitigate poverty. To identify poverty as a factor in violence and against peace. To recognise that democracy favours the fight against poverty. To link social exclusion and poverty. To appreciate that ending poverty is a question of social justice. To recognise the value of formal and informal education as a powerful preventative and mitigating factor for poverty. To identify groups which are particularly vulnerable to poverty and social exclusion. Contents - Knowledge Conceptual (declarative): Poverty: a multi-dimensional phenomenon. Qualitative and quantitative factors involved in the concept of poverty. Social exclusion Social justice Risk factors Preventative factors Procedural: Selection of factors which encourage the creation of poverty. Identification of the dimensions involved in the concept of poverty. Observation of situations of poverty. The relationship between poverty and the denial of human rights. The relationship between effective human rights and the prevention of poverty. Identification of risk factors for poverty. Identification of factors which mitigate and prevent poverty. Recognition of vulnerable groups. Observation and comparison of a range of poverty-wealth contexts sharing a geographic location. Attitude: To raise awareness of the social injustice of poverty. To raise interest in social conduct related to poverty. Appreciation of human rights as factors which can contribute to the prevention and relief of poverty. Prior knowledge: Not necessary.
