Description:

In this learning sequence we will find out about the difference between the weather and the climate, and about the elements and how they are measured.

Teaching orientation:

Objectives: General: To read in detail a range of texts to extract general and specific information, in order to achieve a final objective of appreciating reading as a source of entertainment and information; to acquire the vocabulary required to describe this topic, using dictionaries, other techniques and the library as basic resources; to identify phonetic aspects relating to rhythm, stress and intonation; to examine linguistic structures and lexical aspects of the foreign language and to use these as basic communicative elements; and to work with and understand the socio-cultural dimension. Specific: To understand the difference between weather and climate; to understand the role of the Sun as a cause of weather conditions; to understand the Earth's atmosphere; to list some of the effects of solar heat on land and water and how this affects the weather; to analyse the causes of the seasons; to study the consequences of good and bad weather; to understand different types of rainfall; to understand various types of air flows, such as wind, tornados and hurricanes; to identify the measurement apparatus used in weather centres and what they measure; and to recognise the major weather symbols. Contents ? Knowledge Conceptual (declarative): Defining the weather and climate. The Earth?s atmosphere. Some effects of solar heat on land and sea. Analysing the reasons for the seasons. Study of the consequences of good and bad weather. Different types of rain. Wind, tornados and hurricanes. Measurement instruments. Weather forecasts. Weather symbols. Procedural: Understanding specific information in messages. Matching words and images. Spelling correctly. Completing dialogues. Ordering sequences. Building phrases about a topic. To learn the basic vocabulary for the topic (just the words in upper case). Attitude: Receptive and respectful attitude to people who speak a different language. Appreciating correct understanding and production of simple texts. A positive and optimistic attitude to learning a foreign language. Recognising and evaluating the importance of knowing how to read and write a foreign language. Interest in the climate where we live. Interest in knowing how instruments for measuring the weather work and how to use them. Prior knowledge: Knowledge of English from the Second Stage of Primary education.
