The use of human beings, particularly women, who are treated as the property of others, for sexual exploitation.
General Objectives: To identify and recognise various forms of sexual exploitation which represent real examples of slavery. To recognise women and children as the groups most at risk from this form of slavery. Specific: To identify the various forms of sexual slavery: forced prostitution, sexual slavery, forced marriages. To recognise the characteristics of these forms of slavery. To understand sexual tourism as something which leads to sexual exploitation. To understand how wars lead to increases in sexual slavery. To reflect on sexual exploitation as being contrary to human rights. Contents ? Conceptual Knowledge (declarative): Forced prostitution (through coercion, violence, threats, abuse of authority). Sexual slavery as a form of absolute control of one person over another for sexual purposes without money being involved. Forced marriage through a financial arrangement or in kind, without any right to resist Sexual tourism Procedural: Identification of women, girls and boys as groups which are specifically vulnerable to sexual exploitation. Analysis of the various forms of coercion of women to practice forced prostitution: mistreatment, abuse of children, threats of serious physical harm, keeping someone permanently in debt and poverty, which might include confiscating passports from foreigners, not allowing them to go out alone. Distinction between forced marriages and marriages of convenience with mutual consent. Identification of conduct which encourages sexual exploitation: sexual tourism, conflicts and occupation during wartime, extreme poverty, considering women and children as merchandise. Attitude: To raise interest in offering alternatives for fighting against sexual exploitation through conduct which respects human dignity. Rejection of practices which encourage sexual exploitation, particularly of children, such as sexual tourism. Prior knowledge: Not needed. Access the learning guide for the object.
