In this unit we will focus on transformations on the plane in a very intuitive and practical way. The idea is to try and "visualise" the movements before conceptualising them. In the last section, Symmetry, we shall look at how the three types of transformation relate to each other. The first section about vectors is an introduction to them and is necessary in order to fully understand the notion of translation.
PRIOR KNOWLEDGE: Previous knowledge is not necessary
KNOWLEDGE TYPE: declarative, procedural
LEARNING OBJECTIVES: To introduce the concept of a vector and its coordinates. To be aware of and know how to work out translations using vectors. To be aware of and know how to carry out rotation about a given centre and through a given angle. To be aware of symmetry through a central point. To be aware of and know how to find the symmetry of simple shapes. To know how to find lines of symmetry. To know how these three types of transformation relate to each other.
