In grammar an expletive, sometimes called a dummy subject, is a word that looks like the subject of a sentence, but instead has no real meaning. The most common expletive is there, and it is usually followed by a form of the verb to be. In sentence diagramming an expletive is placed above the subject with no connecting line. This activity is great for late elementary school through middle school.
