The University of Nottingham (informally known as Nottingham University or Nottingham) is a research university based in Nottingham, England, UK. Its main site, University Park Campus, is situated on the outskirts of the City of Nottingham. Founded in 1881 as a constituent college of the University of London, Nottingham became a University in its own right in 1948, when it was awarded its Royal Charter. Nottingham is organised into five faculties and offers about 50 subjects, including a wide range of sciences and humanities. In 2010/11, Nottingham had 34,377 full-time students and 2,735 full-time staff based on its UK campuses, and it is one of the largest universities in the UK. The University is ranked in the UK's Top 10 and the World's Top 75 universities by the Shanghai Jiao Tong (SJTU) and the QS World University Rankings. According to a new study by High Fliers Research, Nottingham is the second most targeted university by the UK's top investment banks, law firms and consultancies. The University has produced a range of distinguished alumni including D.H. Lawrence, English Premier League CEO Richard Scudamore (Law), J D Wetherspoon founder Tim Martin (Law), Sir Peter Mansfield, GlaxoSmithKline CEO Sir Andrew Witty (Economics), Michael Carpenter (Former CEO Citigroup’s Global Corporate & Investment Bank), and is associated with three Nobel Prize winners and several Olympic medal winners. The University had campuses around the world; in its founding site of Nottingham as well as recently built sites in Semenyih, Malaysia and Ningbo, China. It is a member of the Russell Group of research-led British universities and the Universitas 21.
