The Kingdom of Travancore (/ˈtrævəŋkɔər/; Malayalam: തിരുവിതാംകൂർ, tiruvitāṁkūr ? [t̪iɾuʋit̪aːɱkuːr]) was a former Hindu Kingdom (until 1949) or Indian princely state that had been ruled by the Travancore Royal Family from the capital at Padmanabhapuram and Thiruvananthapuram. The Kingdom of Travancore at its zenith comprised most of modern-day central and southern Kerala, Kanyakumari district, and the southernmost parts of Tamil Nadu. The official flag of the state was red with a dextrally-coiled silver conch shell (Turbinella pyrum) at its centre. The king was accorded 21 gun-salute locally and 19-gun salute outside the Kingdom. The Travancore Government took many progressive steps in the socio-economic front and during the reign of Maharajah Sree Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, Travancore became the second most prosperous Princely State in British India, with reputed achievements in education, political administration, public work and social reforms.
