SIOP classroom techniques help students understand material reading material..

SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) classroom techniques are used to make content comprehensible for English language learners. SIOP consists of eight components that include techniques used to enhance student learning. The techniques can be used to teach any student, whether she is an English language learner or a native English speaker.

Insert Method
- The Insert Method is a technique for building background. Copy a non-fiction article on the topic you are teaching. Students partner up and read the article together. While reading, they place a check mark next to a concept or fact they already know, a question mark next to one that is confusing, an exclamation mark next to something surprising and a plus sign next to something new. After reading the text together, they share their markings with another pair of students. If the other pair clears up any confusion or misunderstanding, they replace their mark with an asterisk. When everyone is done they share out loud with the class what they learned.
Gist
- Gist is a summarization procedure that helps students get the "gist" from a lengthy text. Students and teachers read a text together aloud. The teacher then works with students to underline 10 or more words or concepts that they feel are most important for understanding a section of the text. As the students identify them, the teacher writes them on the board. Together, the class and teacher write a summary sentence or two using as many of the words that were listed. Continue doing this through the sections of the text. When the whole text has been read, write a topic sentence together for the summary sentences. The class has produced a summary of a difficult or lengthy text by simply breaking it down into smaller pieces.
Outlines
- This technique requires the teacher to prepare an outline that gives students a place to take notes while reading difficult text. As the students read the text, they add to the outline. The outline technique is beneficial for text that is difficult to understand, such as science and social studies. Some students benefit if the outline is fully completed and they use it as a guide to understanding the text.
SQP2RS (Squeepers)
- Squeepers is beneficial for teaching content while reading an expository text. Squeepers begins with "survey" where the students preview and scan the text for a minute so they get an idea of the concepts they are going to learn about. This is followed by "question, predict, read, respond, summarize."
