This short story is based on the author's childhood, and about his relationship with Rab, a name which is a Lowland Scots form of "Rob" - who is a huge mastiff dog. He is described as being old, gray, brindled and as big as a Highland bull". He is extremely loyal and loving and their relationship continues for six years until tragedy strikes Rab's owner and his family.
