Tynemouth (/ˈtaɪnˌmaʊθ/ or locally /ˈtɔɪnˌmɑːθ/) is a town and a historic borough in Tyne and Wear, England, at the mouth of the River Tyne, between North Shields (on the Tyne) and Cullercoats (on the coast to the North). It is administered as part of the borough of North Tyneside, but until 1974 was an independent county borough, including North Shields, in its own right. It has a population of 17,056.Its history, from the Iron Age to Victorian times and beyond, attracts visitors from around the world. It is a prosperous area with comparatively expensive housing stock, and was represented at Westminster by the conservative MP Neville Trotter up until his retirement in 1997. Since then, Tynemouth has been represented in parliament by the Labour MP Alan Campbell.
