To find out about various forms of child exploitation.

Teaching orientation:

General Objectives: To recognise child labour as a form of slavery To reflect on, and become aware of, the existence of child slavery. Specific: To understand the link between this form of slavery and exploitation of children by adults for economic gain. To identify the main parts of the world where this occurs. To understand the causes of the issue: extreme poverty, low wages, family debts. To understand some of the consequences of this issue: lack of control over own lives, unsanitary living conditions, vulnerability to abuse by owners and lenders, lack of formal education, child abuse and trafficking (transfer to other owner). To encourage critical analysis of forced child labour. Contents ? Conceptual Knowledge (declarative): Forced child labour for debts Form of acquiring debts: inherited, loans, wage advances. Parts of the world where this is particularly prevalent: India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh (Source: Save The Children) Procedural: The relationship between extreme poverty and vulnerability to forced child labour. Location on a world map of areas where this is particularly relevant. A comparison of the consequences for a child's life in our society and in situations of slavery. Attitude: A valuation of these practices based on respect for human rights as a way of protecting the most vulnerable to exploitation. Rejection of forced child labour practices. Prior knowledge: Not needed. Access the learning guide for the object.
