This teaching sequence intends to teach the students about the different types of computer networks and how their design depends on how they will be used. The students will become better acquainted with the devices used in setting up networks and their configuration. The technologies that can be used to access the Internet are also explained.
Knowledge type: declarative, procedural
prerequisite knowledge: Basic circuit diagram layouts. Basic knowledge related to connecting electrical components. Use of Web interfaces to select options and enter data on forms. Basic PC hardware structure. Use of device configuration interfaces in the operating system.
Learning outcomes: General outcomes: To know and understand how different types of computer networks operate. Specific outcomes: To describe the types of computer networks according to the geographical area that they cover. To differentiate among the different designs that may be used to establish local network topologies. To differentiate among the characteristics and field of application for the two main types of cards used in local Ethernet and wireless networks. To apply technical and practical knowledge to install a local network with all the devices that are commonly used. To identify the different technological options currently available, which permit establishing network or local computer access to the Internet. To determine the correct procedure for establishing the connection configuration for a local computer to a local network.
